Why We Built Nihongo Pass
A Japanese language teacher with JLPT N1 โ frustrated by the gap between how Japanese is actually learned and how most apps teach it โ decided to build something better.
Built by a Certified Japanese Teacher
Nihongo Pass was founded by a Japanese language educator based in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, who holds JLPT N1 โ the highest level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test โ and has taught Japanese to students across Asia for years.
Teaching Japanese to students in Mongolia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and beyond revealed a consistent pattern: the best resources were expensive, inaccessible, or designed for learners who were already geographically close to good teachers. Textbooks filled with rote drills. Apps that tested vocabulary but never explained why an answer was wrong.
The question that drove this project: What if a professional Japanese teacher could sit next to every single learner โ in Ulaanbaatar, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, and beyond โ and guide them through exactly what they need to know? That is what Nihongo Pass is designed to be.
The Problem with How Japanese Is Taught
Most JLPT study tools have the same fundamental flaw: they treat Japanese as a list of things to memorize rather than a living language to internalize. Students memorize 800 N5 vocabulary words and still cannot hold a basic conversation. They pass N4 by drilling flashcards and fail N3 because they never understood why the particles work the way they do.
After years of teaching, the patterns became clear. The students who succeeded were not the ones who studied the most hours โ they were the ones who studied the right things at the right time, got corrective feedback immediately, and had someone explain concepts in a language they already understood.
But access to that kind of teaching is expensive and geographically limited. A student in Ulaanbaatar or Hanoi does not have the same access to qualified Japanese tutors as a student in Tokyo or Seoul. Nihongo Pass was built to close that gap.

Explanations are available in English, Vietnamese, Indonesian, and Mongolian because we know that understanding why a grammar rule works is far more valuable when you can read it in your own language. A Vietnamese student should not have to learn Japanese through English if Japanese through Vietnamese serves them better.
