How to Register for the JLPT in Mumbai
Mumbai is the smaller of JALTAP's two centres, and the seat table is the first thing to read: 50 places for N1, 130 for N2, 260 for N3, 460 for N4 and 1,100 for N5. With a window that opens on the same day as Pune and a fee that is higher, the practical advice is simple. Register on 10 August, and if your level is full, Pune is two to three hours away and had four times the N1 seats.

This is the host institution's office, which handles registration and enquiries. Your exam venue is printed on your admission ticket and is usually somewhere else.
How Registration Works in Mumbai
Registration is online at jlpt.jaltap.org.in from 10 to 30 August for the December 2026 test. The process is identical to Pune: Aadhaar-linked OTP on first login, a 3.5 by 4.5 cm JPG photograph, an image of a handwritten signature, online payment by Paytm, UPI, card or net banking, and an admit card downloaded from the portal after 15 October. What differs is the fee and the seat counts.
Registration Steps
Decide on the opening day whether Mumbai or Pune is your centre
Both open on 10 August under the same JALTAP portal. If you are sitting N1 or N2, Mumbai's 50 and 130 seats can be gone quickly; Pune's 120 and 460 give you more margin at a lower fee. Pick before the window opens.
Confirm your Aadhaar-linked mobile number works
First login needs an OTP to that number. Fix it with UIDAI beforehand if the number has changed.
Prepare the photo and signature files
Photo 3.5 by 4.5 cm, JPG, 20 KB to 5 MB, plain background, no selfies. Signature handwritten on white, scanned upright, same size limits. These specifications are the same as Pune.
Register and pay ₹2,965 between 10 and 30 August
Paytm, UPI, card or net banking inside the form. The fee is flat across levels. Keep the payment confirmation.
Download the admit card after 15 October and note your check-in slot
N1 and N2 check in from 8:00 to 8:30 am; N3, N4 and N5 from 11:30 am to 12:00 pm. Bring the printed admit card and original photo ID. The venue is on the card, not at the JALTAP office.
Teacher's Tips
- Mumbai has roughly half of Pune's seats at every level and costs more. Seat availability, not price, should decide which JALTAP centre you choose.
- Watch JALTAP's instructional video before you start. The photo and signature rules are enforced, and a rejected upload late in the window can cost you the seat.
- Delhi, Pune and Mumbai each set their own fee. A figure you saw for one city is not the one you will pay in another.
