How to Register for the JLPT in Pune
Pune is run by JALTAP, the Japanese Language Teachers' Association, and it does two things differently from Delhi. The fee is the same for every level, and the form starts with an OTP sent to the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar. If that number is old or belongs to a parent, sort it out before the window opens, because the form will not let you past step one without it.

For the December 2026 exam, forms were on sale from 10 to 30 August 2026, all levels together. Seats are capped per level (120 for N1, 460 for N2, 660 for N3, 960 for N4 and 2,200 for N5), and JALTAP's notice says to register early rather than near the end.

This is the host institution's office, which handles registration and enquiries. Your exam venue is printed on your admission ticket and is usually somewhere else.
How Registration Works in Pune
Registration is online at jlpt.jaltap.org.in for a fixed window, 10 to 30 August for the December 2026 test, with a set number of seats per level. First-time users verify identity through an Aadhaar-linked OTP, then upload a passport-style photograph (3.5 by 4.5 cm, JPG, 20 KB to 5 MB, plain background, no selfies) and an image of a handwritten signature on a white background. Payment is inside the form by Paytm wallet, UPI, card or net banking. The admit card is downloaded from the portal after 15 October rather than posted.
Registration Steps
Check which mobile number is linked to your Aadhaar
The portal sends a one-time password to that number on first login. A number you no longer use, or one registered to a family member who is not with you, stops the application before it starts. Update it with UIDAI first if needed.
Prepare the photo and signature files to the specification
Photo: 3.5 cm wide by 4.5 cm high, JPG or JPEG, between 20 KB and 5 MB, plain background, not a selfie. Signature: handwritten on white paper, scanned or photographed cleanly, upright, same size limits. JALTAP rejects typed signatures and scans of ID photos used as a signature.
Open the form between 10 and 30 August and pick your level
All levels open together in Pune, unlike Delhi. Seats per level are fixed, and N1 has the fewest at 120, so N1 and N2 candidates have the least room to wait.
Pay ₹2,611 inside the form
Paytm wallet, UPI, credit or debit card, or net banking. The amount is the same whichever level you chose. Keep the confirmation.
Download the admit card after 15 October
It appears in your portal login rather than in the post. Print it. On the day you need either the printed admit card or original valid photo ID, and arriving with both is the sensible reading of the notice.
Arrive in the right check-in slot
N1 and N2 check in from 8:00 to 8:30 am; N3, N4 and N5 from 11:30 am to 12:00 pm. The venue is on the admit card and is not the JALTAP office.
Teacher's Tips
- JALTAP publishes a step-by-step video for the form and asks applicants to watch it first. It is short, and the photo and signature rejections it warns about are the ones that actually happen.
- The fee is flat, so there is no saving in registering for a lower level than you intend to sit.
- Mumbai is also run by JALTAP but has its own fee (₹2,965) and much smaller seat counts. Do not assume the Pune numbers apply there.
