🇳🇵How to Register for the JLPT in Nepal

Nepal has one JLPT test city, Kathmandu, and one organiser, the Japanese Language Teachers' Association Nepal (JALTAN). Registration is an online form that opens at a fixed hour and closes either at the published deadline or when the seats are gone, and in recent cycles the seats have gone first. Where you live in Nepal matters less than whether you are at a keyboard when the form opens.

Rs 3,000 for any level, paid through Khalti. The amount has been the same in the 2023 and 2025 notices.

Registration window

For the July 2025 sitting the form opened at 1:00 PM on 17 March and was scheduled to close at 5:00 PM on 31 March, with JALTAN stating that registration would close earlier if the seat limit was reached. The December 2023 window ran the same way, from 18 August to 2 September. Expect a fortnight in mid-March and mid-to-late August.

Before you register

JALTAN publishes a notice about a week before each window with the exact opening time. The form is the only way to register; there is no counter application and no agent can hold a seat for you. Payment is through the Khalti wallet inside the form, so an unfunded wallet on opening day means starting again while the seat count falls. If the exam is cancelled, JALTAN refunds the fee to the same Khalti account.

Registration Steps

Watch for the JALTAN notice, not the calendar

JALTAN posts the opening date and time on its site and Facebook page roughly a week ahead. The window has opened at 1:00 PM in the notices I have seen, so plan around an afternoon, not a midnight launch.

Load Rs 3,000 into Khalti before the form opens

Payment happens inside the application through the Khalti wallet. Top it up the day before. Setting up or funding a wallet while the form is open is how people lose the seat they had already half-filled.

Fill the form at jlpt.org.np as soon as it opens

Seats are capped and the notice says the form shuts automatically when they are taken, deadline or not. Have your name as it appears on your citizenship card or passport, your level, and a passport-style photo ready.

Pay and keep the Khalti receipt

Until the admit card is issued, the Khalti transaction is your proof of registration. Screenshot it.

Collect your admit card before exam day

JALTAN issues the 受験票 (juken-hyō / praveś patra) ahead of the test with your seat and the Kathmandu venue on it. Bring it with the photo ID you registered under.

Teacher's Tips

There is no test site outside Kathmandu. If you are in Pokhara, Biratnagar or Chitwan, the exam is a trip, so book it once the admit card confirms your venue.
Level cannot be changed after submission, and registering for N3 without N4 is allowed. Decide before the form opens, not while the seat counter is dropping.
The fee is set by JALTAN in rupees. Yen figures on international sites, and the ¥7,500 charged inside Japan, have nothing to do with what you pay in Kathmandu.
