🇸🇬How to Register for the JLPT in Singapore

Singapore registers through one organiser, the Japanese Cultural Society (JCSS), and the detail that decides whether you get a seat is the opening schedule. Levels do not open on the same day. For December 2026, N1 opened first on 11 August and N5 last on 21 August, each at 9:00 AM, each with a fixed number of seats. If you note the date for the wrong level you can miss yours entirely.

Registration window

For the December 2026 test, registration ran from 11 to 28 August and opened by level at 9:00 AM: N1 on 11 August, N2 on 13 August, N3 on 17 August, N4 on 19 August and N5 on 21 August. Each level closed when its seats were taken or on 28 August, whichever came first. The July sitting follows the same pattern in the spring; check the JCSS page for the dates.

Before you register

Registration and payment are online only, and the application is not processed until payment has gone through. Each level has its own cap (400 for N1 to N3, 450 for N4 and N5) filled first come, first served. Once you have registered there is no refund and no change of level, so choose the level before the page opens, not while the form is in front of you. Photos are not required at registration; on exam day you show a physical NRIC or other physical photo ID.

Registration Steps

Find the opening date for your level, not for the test

JCSS staggers the openings over about ten days, highest level first. Write down the date and the 9:00 AM time for the level you are sitting, and ignore the others.

Be on the registration page at 9:00 AM

Seats per level are fixed, 400 for N1 to N3 and 450 for N4 and N5, and go in order of payment. The 28 August closing date is a ceiling; popular levels can fill well before it.

Pay first, then complete the form

The JCSS system takes payment and then sends you on to the registration form. An application without a completed payment is not processed, so do not close the window between the two steps.

Keep the acknowledgement email

JCSS sends an acknowledgement confirming your level and application on the same day. Until the test voucher arrives, that email is your proof.

Wait for the test voucher in mid-October

For the December test JCSS mails the voucher around mid-October (mid-May for July). It carries your seat details for the SMU venue. Bring it with your physical NRIC or another physical photo ID; a photo of the card on your phone is not accepted.

Results arrive in mid-March

December results are released around mid-March, July results around the end of September. Certificates follow by post.

Teacher's Tips

No photo is needed to register, which is unusual for the JLPT. Do not wait for a photo studio appointment before applying.
Because the opening is by level, deciding between two levels on the day is expensive: the lower level opens later, and by then the higher one may be full and unrefundable. Decide before 11 August.
The fee is the same for N1, N2 and N3, so the price is not a reason to pick a lower level.
